LINGUISTIC CREATIVITY IN DIGITAL SPACES: A COMPUTATIONAL SOCIOLINGUISTIC ANALYSIS

Abstract

Digital communication has transformed the ways individuals construct identity, perform sociolinguistic variation, and exercise linguistic creativity. Within Pakistan’s multilingual ecology, online platforms provide a dynamic space where English, Urdu, Punjabi, Sindhi, and Romanized scripts coexist, converge, and collide. This article explores linguistic creativity in digital spaces by employing a computational sociolinguistic approach that integrates quantitative corpus methods with critical sociolinguistic analysis. Drawing on a dataset of social media interactions, Whatsapp messages, and digital memes from Pakistani users, the study examines patterns of code-switching, hybrid lexical formations, transliteration practices, and stylistic innovations. The findings reveal that Pakistani digital discourse is shaped by sociocultural identity, technological affordances, and ideological negotiations that challenge traditional boundaries of language use. Computational tools such as frequency analysis, concordances, and collocation mapping were employed to track recurrent features of digital creativity, while sociolinguistic interpretation highlights how these practices index class, gender, and generational identities. By situating the analysis in Pakistan’s socio-digital landscape, this study contributes to understanding how creativity in digital communication not only reflects but also redefines sociolinguistic hierarchies and power relations.
