Abstract

In today’s algorithm-driven media landscape, emotionally intense film trailers are not only powerful promotional tools but also potential psychological triggers. This study investigates the influence of film trailer exposure on doom-scrolling behavior among young social media users, with a focus on the moderating roles of Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) and social media addiction. Using a quantitative cross-sectional design, data were collected from 250 participants aged 18–35 who regularly engage with film content on platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter. The survey measured trailer exposure frequency, perceived emotional intensity, doom-scrolling tendencies, FOMO, and addiction levels using standardized Likert-based scales. Descriptive results revealed moderate levels of doom-scrolling and high trailer engagement, particularly on visual-first platforms. Correlation analysis showed significant positive associations between doom-scrolling and both FOMO and emotional intensity. Regression findings confirmed that greater trailer exposure and higher emotional intensity significantly predict increased doom-scrolling behavior. Although FOMO and social media addiction were not strong direct predictors, moderation analysis indicated that their interaction with trailer intensity amplifies doom-scrolling tendencies. These findings contribute to a growing understanding of how affective digital stimuli influence compulsive consumption patterns. The results underscore the need for emotionally responsible content design and improved media literacy to mitigate the unintended psychological consequences of promotional media. This study offers actionable insights for content creators, platform designers, and digital wellness advocates seeking to balance engagement with user mental health.
