THE IMPACT OF HIGHER EDUCATION ON WOMEN’S POLITICAL PARTICIPATION IN BALOCHISTAN

Abstract

This study examines the influence of higher education on the political participation of women in Balochistan, a region often characterized by conservative socio-cultural norms and limited female representation in formal politics. Despite structural barriers, the growing access of women to higher education has opened new avenues for civic engagement and socio-political involvement. This research investigates how educational attainment contributes to women's awareness of political rights, confidence in public expression, and participation in democratic processes. Using a mixed-methods approach, the study collects data through surveys and interviews with female students, graduates, and academic professionals across key districts of Balochistan. The findings reveal that higher education enhances critical thinking, civic responsibility, and political consciousness among women. Educated women are more likely to engage in activities such as voting, attending public forums, and participating in policy discussions at the community level. Notably, the research highlights an emerging trend of women increasingly participating in non-electoral political activities. These include involvement in social movements, awareness campaigns, community-based advocacy, and public protests. This shift reflects a broader transformation in how educated women perceive their role in society and politics, moving beyond conventional political structures toward more grassroots and issue-based activism. Nevertheless, the study also identifies key challenges impeding broader participation, including societal resistance, institutional neglect, and the absence of inclusive political platforms. The paper concludes that while higher education plays a significant role in empowering women politically, targeted reforms, supportive networks, and gender-sensitive policies are essential to translate educational gains into long-term political inclusion and leadership.
