Abstract

Between 2022 and 2026, Generation Z emerged as a significant social, economic, and political force in South Asia, with an increasing number of young people entering higher education, the labor market, and public life. As a demographic cohort born approximately between 1997 and 2012, Generation Z has been profoundly influenced by the rapid expansion of digital technologies, social media, and globalization, which have reshaped patterns of communication, political engagement, education, and identity formation across the region. This study examines the challenges and societal implications associated with the rise of Generation Z in South Asian countries, including Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, and the Maldives. Particular attention is given to issues such as youth unemployment, educational disparities, digital activism, social polarization, climate insecurity, and evolving cultural norms. The study argues that Generation Z possesses considerable potential to contribute to innovation, democratic participation, and socio-economic development. However, structural inequalities, governance deficiencies, and economic uncertainties continue to constrain the effective realization of this potential. The findings highlight the growing influence of youth-driven transformation on social cohesion, public policy, economic progress, and the future development trajectory of South Asia.
