Abstract

This study explores the sociological factors influencing gendered academic outcomes in Pakistani university spaces, highlighting how socialization, institutional structures, and cultural norms shape students’ experiences and achievements. Employing a qualitative research design, data were collected through purposive sampling of published research documents, including peer-reviewed articles and theoretical analyses, selected for their relevance to gender and higher education. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis, involving iterative coding, pattern identification, and refinement that led to the derivation of eight major themes: gendered socialization and early academic experiences, access and enrollment patterns, classroom interactions and participation, curriculum and pedagogy, institutional structures and policies, socio-cultural constraints and opportunities, student agency and coping strategies, and intersectionality of gender with socio-economic and regional factors. The findings reveal that female students often encounter structural, cultural, and institutional barriers that constrain participation, engagement, and academic performance, whereas male students navigate societal expectations shaping their educational choices and behaviors. The study underscores the role of student agency and resilience in negotiating these challenges and highlights the importance of gender-sensitive policies, inclusive curricula, and equitable pedagogical practices. By integrating theoretical perspectives such as gender socialization, cultural capital, feminist pedagogy, and intersectionality, the research provides insights into promoting gender equity and enhancing academic outcomes in Pakistani higher education.
