Abstract

This study examines the intersection between religious freedom and social justice, focusing on the protection of the social and civil rights of religious minorities in Pakistan. Religious freedom is widely recognized as a fundamental human right and an essential component of democratic societies, closely connected with principles of equality, dignity, and inclusive citizenship. Despite constitutional guarantees and international human rights commitments, religious minorities in Pakistan continue to face various social, legal, and institutional challenges that affect the realization of their rights and equal participation in society. The study adopts a qualitative and analytical research methodology based primarily on secondary data sources, including academic literature, constitutional provisions, international human rights instruments, legal commentaries, and reports from national and international human rights organizations. Through a doctrinal and conceptual analysis of these sources, the research explores the relationship between religious freedom and social justice and examines the gap between constitutional guarantees and their practical implementation in Pakistan. The findings suggest that although Pakistan’s constitutional and legal framework formally recognizes religious freedom and minority rights, structural inequalities, social discrimination, and institutional weaknesses often limit the effective protection of these rights in practice. The study argues that strengthening legal enforcement mechanisms, promoting institutional accountability, encouraging interfaith dialogue, and improving socio-economic inclusion are essential steps for advancing social justice and protecting religious diversity. Ensuring genuine religious freedom is therefore crucial for safeguarding minority rights, strengthening democratic governance, and promoting a more inclusive and pluralistic society in Pakistan.
