Abstract

This study examines the influence of Instagram on body image, self-esteem, and emotional well-being among 225 female undergraduate students in Sialkot. Using a quantitative survey design, data were collected on Instagram usage patterns, exposure to idealized images, and psychological outcomes. Findings reveal that excessive Instagram use significantly predicts body dissatisfaction, reduced self-confidence, and increased stress or anxiety. Nearly three-quarters of respondents reported frequent social comparison, and over two-thirds indicated lowered self-esteem and life satisfaction due to Instagram exposure. Regression analysis confirmed that Instagram use and viewing idealized content are strongly associated with negative psychological effects. Grounded in Social Comparison Theory, the study highlights that Instagram acts as a powerful medium shaping appearance-related perceptions and emotional health. These findings underscore the need for awareness programs and interventions to promote healthy social media use among young women.
