Abstract

Green bond financing has emerged as a strategic instrument for directing capital toward environmental objectives, yet its effectiveness in shaping corporate outcomes in emerging markets remains contested. Evidence derived from a panel of 100 firms across Brazil, India, Indonesia, South Africa, and Turkey (2019–2023) indicates that green bond issuance aligns with measurable improvements in environmental performance, including accelerated reductions in carbon intensity and gradual enhancements in disclosure practices. A Difference-in-Differences approach supports the interpretation that these gains extend beyond general market trends, although the magnitude of the effect is incremental rather than transformative. Baseline characteristics complicate the causal narrative. Firms that access green bond markets already operate with superior performance and transparency metrics before issuance, implying that capital flows toward firms with existing strategic or operational advantages. The green bond mechanism, therefore, operates less as a universal catalyst and more as an amplifier of credible pre-commitments, rewarding firms that are already positioned to execute environmental improvements. This conditional effectiveness has implications for both academic debates and policy design: instruments labelled “green” cannot be evaluated in isolation from institutional capacity, sectoral composition, and market accessibility. The findings refine the discourse on sustainable finance by demonstrating that the impact of green bonds in emerging markets is neither illusory nor automatic. Gains are real but uneven, contingent on firm readiness and regulatory context, and unlikely to diffuse without complementary interventions. Recognizing these constraints is essential for constructing a financial architecture capable of delivering credible environmental outcomes rather than symbolic alignment.
