EXPLORING STUDENTS MOTIVATION IN ONLINE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT

Background: The rapid shift toward online education has transformed traditional learning models, making student motivation a crucial determinant of academic success. Understanding what drives students to engage and perform in virtual environments is essential for improving instructional design and learner outcomes.
Objectives: This study aims to explore the factors influencing students’ motivation in online learning environments and to examine the relationship between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation with students’ engagement and academic performance.
Methodology: A quantitative research design was adopted, utilizing a structured questionnaire distributed to 200 undergraduate students enrolled in online courses across various disciplines. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation, and regression analysis to identify key motivational determinants and their impact on learning outcomes.
Key Findings: The results revealed that intrinsic motivation—particularly interest in learning and self-efficacy—had a stronger positive correlation with student engagement and performance compared to extrinsic motivators such as grades and external rewards. Furthermore, the availability of interactive tools and instructor feedback significantly enhanced students’ motivation levels.
Conclusion: The study concludes that fostering intrinsic motivation through interactive content, timely feedback, and self-directed learning opportunities is vital for sustaining student engagement in online education. These insights can guide educators and institutions in designing more effective and motivating online learning environments.
