THE GROWING TREND OF OLD AGE HOMES IN CONTEMPORARY TIMES: CAUSES, CONSEQUENCES, AND SOCIO-MORAL IMPLICATIONS

Abstract

In contemporary societies, the phenomenon of old age homes has witnessed a steady increase, reflecting profound transformations in family structures, cultural values, and social responsibilities. Traditionally, elderly care was considered a sacred duty within the family, where respect, affection, and moral obligations ensured the well-being of aging parents. However, changing economic conditions, urbanization, globalization, and the growing influence of individualism have contributed to weakening familial bonds and reshaping perceptions of responsibility toward the elderly. This research aims to critically examine the rising trend of old age homes, identify its underlying causes, and explore its social, cultural, and ethical implications in the modern context. The study adopts a qualitative research design, relying on analytical and descriptive methods to assess the issue. It investigates multiple dimensions, including the erosion of intergenerational solidarity, the impact of women’s increasing participation in the workforce, the challenges of migration and transnational families, and the declining role of religious and moral values in shaping attitudes toward elder care. Furthermore, it highlights the psychological consequences faced by the elderly in institutional settings, such as loneliness, loss of identity, and emotional neglect, while also acknowledging the potential benefits, including access to professional healthcare and companionship with peers. The findings suggest that while old age homes may address certain practical needs, they often symbolize a deeper social and moral crisis within modern societies. The paper argues for the revival of ethical and spiritual principles that emphasize family responsibility, compassion, and respect for the elderly. It concludes by recommending a balanced approach that integrates modern welfare facilities with the preservation of traditional family values, thereby ensuring dignity, security, and emotional well-being for the aging population.
