THE RESURGENCE OF THE TALIBAN AND ITS IMPACTS ON PAKISTAN’S SECURITY

Abstract

This study identified the resurgent Taliban in Afghanistan in August 2021 has tremendously destabilized the security condition in Pakistan and rekindled cross-border militancy and threatening the stability of the region. Regardless of the historical and cultural links, the failure of the Taliban to regulate the operations of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and Islamic State-Khorasan Province (ISKP) in Afghanistan soil has led to a 79 percent rise of terrorism attacks in Pakistan up to 2023, with some debilitating attacks in Peshawar and Chitral. The initial aspirations of tranquility and economic interactions by the Taliban government have been shadowed by the escalating violence, weapons running and Islamic militant safe havens which portends to aggravate the security lapses along the porous Durand Line. The paper will examine how Taliban has influenced security dynamics in Pakistan, including the resurgence of the TTP, infiltration across the borders, and the troubled counterterrorism measures by Pakistan. It further discusses the economic impacts such as derailed trade, destruction of infrastructure, and reduced foreign investment as well as the humanitarian emergencies brought about by flush flows of refugees and internal displacement. Diplomacy with Afghanistan, India, China, and western powers has also worsened, making the strategic position of Pakistan more difficult. This study analyzes Pakistan counterterrorism measures using qualitative analysis of policy reports, scholarly studies and expertise and offers policy suggestions, including improvement of border security, intelligence-based operations, engaging the region in diplomacy and socio-economic growth in conflict areas. Its findings provide an urgency of a multifaceted security framework to curtail transnational threats to stabilize the internal and regional security condition in Pakistan following the Taliban regime.
