Abstract

This paper offers a close reading of Ghulam Abbas’s short story Katba, exploring how semiotic elements reveal deeper structures of postcolonial governance, social hierarchy, and class struggle. The story, set in a post-independence urban landscape, subtly critiques the failure of state mechanisms and the persistence of colonial legacies. Through the use of symbols—such as the neglected gravestone (katba), laboring bodies, and urban decay—the text articulates the marginalization of the working class and exposes the illusion of progress in a postcolonial context. The study draws on semiotic and postcolonial theoretical frameworks to unpack the layered meanings embedded in the narrative. It argues that Katba serves not merely as a realist account of urban life, but as an allegorical critique of structural violence, false modernity, and the moral fatigue of governance. By situating the text within the broader discourse of postcolonial literature, this research highlights how literary form becomes a vehicle for political commentary and social resistance.
