EDUCATIONAL GAPS AND JUSTICE DELIVERY: AN EXAMINATION OF THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM OF BALOCHISTAN AND THE ROLE OF TEACHERS IN LEGAL LITERACY

Abstract

In this study, both the dysfunctions in how the criminal justice system works and the gap in education that prevents Baloch people from being involved in society are pointed out. Whereas earlier works examined institutional problems, this study points out the crucial effect teachers and education can have on educating people and promoting reform. The research team used both analysis of figures and interviews with law enforcement, policymakers, judges and teachers and they found that there are repeated delays in courts, fewer convictions than needed, a deficiency in law enforcement and a lack of effective resources for prosecutors. Besides, teachers lack the basic legal knowledge needed for their work because such a subject is not included in teachers' education programs. But most educators were ready to teach justice in classes provided with suitable support. It seems that including legal education in teacher preparation helps teachers teach their students about justice and how to be more informed citizens. It is concluded that justice reform in Pakistan should focus on institutions as well as education and teachers should play a major role in promoting civics and legal knowledge.
